BAP Gallery's "Making Artists Known" series showcases contemporary artists who are shaping the current cultural landscape by providing a live sensory experience.
Fidel Olaya is known for his works created over long months, perhaps even years, during which he collects leaves, flowers and all the natural materials he finds in Ibiza's forests and fields. These materials then resonate with the artist, giving meaning to his new individual stories. Fidel carefully and calmly composes each piece in its vibrant environment.
Olaya has long challenged conventional ideas about the treatment of his meticulous work, eventually developing a unique technique. Approaching each surface as a potential space, he creates stories in the light lamps he calls them. BAP Gallery's "Making Artists Known" series presents contemporary artists shaping the current cultural landscape, providing a live sensory impression. He meticulously selects, prepares and paints the wood before building the lamp structure and moving on to the final creation and assembly process.
In this episode of Meet the Artists, Grosse welcomes Art Basel to his custom-designed Berlin studio to discuss the solitude, scale and impulse underlying his creative process. He also discusses the pieces he created in his New Zealand studio, which, once rolled up and shipped back to Berlin, are displayed in exhibitions and fairs after a brief stay in his studio. Contemplating the twenty lit lamps is to enter a space of harmony and stillness, as the exhibition is aptly titled. He meticulously selects, prepares, paints and builds the wooden lamp structures before moving on to the final creation and assembly process.
The artist Fidel's project, 'Stillness', is a temporary exhibition running from 4 to 31 May 2025. More information is available here.
'These images have been reflected through this word, and it is also their emanation. It is May in a garden. The plant world is awakening, and the spring sap follows its vertical path from earth to sky, renewing life. This is why the exhibition refers to another movement that also emerges from nature: Stillness.
This movement has settled, almost by gravity, on all the plant elements we see in the compositions, evoking atmospheres of serenity that also take hold within us". Fidel Olaya
